HOBY Academic All-Stars

Hi HOBY Volunteers!

HOBY International is excited to relaunch our 2017-18 Academic All-Stars program! This initiative is designed to recognize HOBY alumni for their accomplishments in the classroom, and to raise funds for the sites and HOBY International.  We are pleased to share the pilot for this initiative was a success and should be even stronger moving forward. Registration for the 2017-18 Academic All-Stars program begins September 1st and closes September 30th for graduating alumni and volunteers, so use the information below to learn more about what you can do to make this program a success for your site!

What is an Academic All-Star?

A graduating HOBY alumnus or volunteer with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher may apply to become an Academic All-Star to be recognized by HOBY for their academic achievements. High school seniors or college seniors are eligible.

How does one become an Academic All-Star?

HOBY alumni or volunteers will apply via the online application (which opens September 1st), submit a nonrefundable $47.95 application fee, and upload a scanned copy of their transcript through their application by September 30th.  For each submission, $20 will go directly to the site from where the student is an alumnus or volunteer, and the remainder will stay with HOBY International and cover costs of materials and mailing.  HOBY International will process applications, produce and send awards packages, and remit checks to each site with appropriate detail (including the total number of students participating from each site and the names of those who want their names posted on the website.)

What does an Academic All-Star receive?

Each Academic All-Star will receive a congratulatory letter and certificate, a graduation cord with HOBY colors and charm, his/her name publicly acknowledged on a dedicated section of the HOBY website, and the blurb suitable for inclusion on college applications.

What does a site need to do?

To take full advantage of the program, we encourage you to promote the Academic All-Stars to your graduating seniors through your website, social media channels, and via email to encourage participation. Attached is a Digital Toolkit you can use to market this program, which will also be posted to HOBY Online. The more students who participate, the more funds you will receive.  As this is a voluntary program, we suggest no fee waivers.

 

Timeline:

September 1, 2017 Online registration goes live on HOBY International’s  webpage. Page contains description of the program & link to Formstack application.
September 1, 2017 Letter directing seniors to application form will be mailed to high school seniors (2016 alumni).
September 1, 2017 Email directing to application form will be mailed to projected college seniors (2012 alumni).
September 30, 2017 Applications and payment due via Formstack.
November 30, 2017 All awards packages will be mailed from HOBY International and should arrive to participants by early December.
November 30, 2017 Checks cut and sent to respective sites. For states with corporate boards that cover multiple sites, the corporate board will receive the check and the accounting, and will be responsible for using their best judgment to administer funds appropriately.

 

During our pilot round of Academic All-Stars, Kentucky brought in the highest number of participants at 76 alumni! Let’s aim to exceed that number and bring in even more donations and engagement for your local HOBY site.

While the application will be accessible to the general public via our website, only graduating alumni and volunteers will be eligible. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Thank you for all you do for HOBY!
